The Prevalence of Antibodies for Toxoplasma in Children

Abstract
Toxoplasmosis is one of the commonest infections of warm-blooded animals and human beings.
It generally produces an asymptomatic or mild infection, but may cause serious congenital and ocular infections and acute, severe infection in immunosuppressed patients. Congenital toxoplasmosis is still a significant cause of intrauterine death, blindness, psychomotor retardation, and convulsive disorders.
Present study was carried out to determined the prevalence of antibodies for toxoplasma in pediatric age groups. 36 samples of cord blood sera and 84 cases from age 1 month to 15 years were examined by an indirect hemagglutination test with Cellognost Toxoplasmosis (Behring).
The results were as follows:
1. The most of the cases (94.2%) showed serologically negative titer of 1:16.
2. The titer of serum toxoplasma antibody in cord sera were 1:32 in two cases, and 1:64 in one case. None had antibody titer more than 1:32 in infantile age group but one case in young children age groups. In school children group, the serum toxoplasma antibody titer of 1:32 was two cases (8.0%),1:64 was one case, there was somewhat increasing prevalence of positive serologic reactions with increasing age.
3. There was no significant difference between sexes.
